The woods are big and I am small
Can't find my way around at all
But Mother told me that today
She'll teach me how to track my prey
Well, tracking's tricky! Tracking's tough
Mother gives me half a huff
Says "track me, Crackle!" and I tried!
But Mother had to go and hide
The woods are dark, I can't see stars
(By now the holt must be so far…)
The grass is tall, I can't see ground
There's chirping, chipping, yipping sounds
And noises that I've never heard
(Was that a bug or just a bird?)
And there are vines and sticky plants
(They caught my hair and tore my pants)
And ooh, there's worms down in the dirt
(I think I got one down my shirt)
I think I'm lost. I'm sure. You'll see –

A hole inside a tree.


It really is a cozy hole
(Mother won't be glad at all)
It's very dark inside, but warm
(It's like I'm home away from home)
There's chipping, yipping, dripping sounds
(Means I can sing, but won't be found)
And there are bugs inside the wood
(Means I can eat them and they're good)
And sticky plants… my shoes are worn
My shirt is dirty, pants are torn
(It isn't very big a tear…)
In fact… I think I'll stay right here
It's comfy, secret, out of sight…
I'll learn to track some other night
I'll stay right here. It's warm, it's dry
And Mother, though I'm sure she'll try
Won't find me anywhere at all
