I watch you watching her.
Your eyes sparkle with gleeful pride.
Where is the Joy
When you gaze on me?
How can a word
Or an action left undone
Leave me limp,
Lonely,
While surrounded by kin?
I'm not him.
I can't be him.
I'm not you either
Despite your wishes.

But I am Chief.

I can fill every corner
Of our home with my
Woeful song
And multitudes will cry with me.
My words calm fears
Or incite action.
Laughter and smiles
Follow in my wake.
But, from you, I get
Pointed platitudes
and cool calculation.

Why don't you love me?
